INFLUENCE OF PARENTAL SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN KADUNA STATE

Abstract

This study examined the influence of parental socio-economic status on the academic achievement of secondary school students in Kaduna State. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. Data were collected using questionnaires administered to students and parents. Findings revealed that parental income, educational background, and occupation significantly influence students’ academic achievement. The study recommends parental involvement and government intervention to bridge socio-economic gaps affecting education.

Introduction

Students’ academic success is influenced by several factors, one of which is parental socio-economic status. Parents with higher income and education levels are often better positioned to provide learning materials, conducive study environments, and academic support.

In Kaduna State, disparities in parental socio-economic conditions contribute to unequal educational outcomes among students.

Parental Socio-Economic Status

Socio-economic status refers to a family’s economic and social position based on income, education, and occupation. It determines access to educational resources, quality schooling, and academic support.

Influence on Academic Achievement

The study identified that:

Students from high socio-economic backgrounds perform better academically
Parents’ education level positively affects students’ study habits
Financial constraints limit access to textbooks and extra lessons

Methodology

A descriptive survey design was used. Questionnaires were administered to selected secondary school students and parents. Data were analyzed using simple percentages and mean scores.

Conclusion

Parental socio-economic status significantly influences students’ academic achievement. Addressing economic inequalities will improve educational outcomes.

Recommendations

Government should support low-income families through educational grants.
Parents should actively monitor and support their children’s education.
Schools should provide remedial support for disadvantaged students.
